Traffic lights turned on at Brady Road and McGillivray Boulevard

Winnipeg, MB – After many years’ work, the switch was today flipped on a set of new traffic lights at Brady Road and McGillivray Boulevard.

The four-way lights flank what will soon be a new entrance to FortWhyte Alive.

“For years, pedestrians and cyclists have called for safe access across McGillivray Boulevard into FortWhyte Alive. I’m so pleased to finally be able to deliver on those calls” said Councillor Janice Lukes, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works, who spearheaded the installation. “These four-way lights increase safety and connectivity in Winnipeg’s active transportation network and will provide much needed crossing controls for pedestrian, cycling and vehicular traffic at this very busy intersection.”

“Prioritizing road safety is important to my constituent and Winnipeggers as a whole,” said Evan Duncan, Councillor for Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood. “This controlled intersection at FortWhyte is another step, amongst others to come, to address the safe flow of east and west traffic.”

“This crucial and long-awaited development ensures a safer crossing and boosts community access to our growing site,” said Liz Wilson, president and CEO of FortWhyte Alive, who was joined at the event by contractors working on the FortWhyte expansion. "We are so excited to expand FortWhyte's capacity with our investment in the energy-efficient Buffalo Crossing that will open to the public in early 2025. These new traffic lights and crosswalk set the stage for expanded access at the new southern gateway to our site. We are so appreciative of the City of Winnipeg's support, and especially the tireless efforts of Councillor Janice Lukes, in helping to preserve our green space and enhance access to our site. The safe pedestrian crossing and the planned new Transit bus stop will both be game-changers, making it easier for our staff, volunteers and visitors to reach FortWhyte. For many, getting here has been a barrier, and we're eager to welcome everyone to FortWhyte Alive with these improved access and active transportation options."

While the lights are now operational for all four directions of traffic, access to the new FortWhyte entrance is not expected to open until next winter.
